Floods are the most common and most destructive natur al disaster in the United States. A high percentage of all natural disaste rs involve flooding\, and many areas of the country have experienced flood s or flash floods in recent years. Damage from flooding is not covered und er a standard homeowner's policy. Flood insurance is a special policy that is federally backed by the (NFIP)\, the National Flood Insurance Program\ , and available for homeowners\, renters and businesses. The National Floo d Insurance Program aims to reduce the impact of flooding on private and p ublic structures. It does so by providing affordable insurance to property owners and by encouraging communities to adopt and enforce floodplain man agement regulations.
